The World Series of Poker also referred to as the WSOP is broadcast on ESPN. It is the largest poker tournament event in the world. The World Series of Poker is played through out the summer at Harrahs in Las Vegas. They have about 30 different events where Texas Hold-em, Razz, Stud, Omaha are played. The final event the World Series of Poker Main Event is the largest poker tournament in the world. The final table for the last 2 years have each gotten at least a million dollars each. The biggest WSOP Main Event was in 2006 when Jamie Gold won $12 million dollars for first place. The World Series of Poker is hosted by Lon McEachern, Norman Chad. The WSOP is shown on ESPN a couple months after the event is played. This is so they can cut down the hands shown and add commentary to each hand. For die-hard poker fans the WSOP final tables can be seen on the official WSOP website (They do cost money to view). They also have a popular main event WSOP pay-per-view event hosted by Phil Gordon, Ali Nejad which is broadcast for however long the final table lasts which is usually upwords of 10 hours. The WSOP is a driving factor in the sudden popularity of poker especially texas hold-em. When Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP main event in 2003 many amatuers felt they could replicate his success and the event grew from 839 players in 2003 to 6,358 in 2007. The biggest WSOP main event field was in 2006 when 8,773 people registered and played in the $10k buy-in event. The World Series of Poker broadcasts are new during the fall when they show each tournament in order of when they are played. The last is the main event and then the invite only tournament of champions. Throughout the year they show re-runs of the past years and years prior on ESPN and ESPN2.
